The May 13, 1956, on the occasion of the Marian Year, the Archbishop, Mons. Angelo Paino elevated the church to the rank of Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is also the Parish Church and is entitled "Santa Maria del Carmine". The parish, which is the oldest in the city, took the name 17 December 1988, whereas, previously, was named "San Lorenzo".
